To get elected, a candidate must convince others
they will get something for their money by investing
in his or her campaign — but not quid pro quo.

That’s the American way, but to make it work,
we must stop accusing self-righteous family values
crusaders, who commit adultery, of hypocrisy.

Weaklings break wedding vows. Those who
go back on implied promises to campaign contributors
are often stalwart statesman — heroic hypocrites.
