McCain misses the point on immigration.
Unscrupulous businesses benefit from the
status quo. Until government stops enabling
their crimes any change in the law is a waste.

Instead of blanket amnesty, let employers
buy legal status for people they claim to need,
by paying a fair wage, a big fine and having
the status of all their employees checked.

At the same time, step up raids on firms
suspected of employing illegals. Give them
a choice of prosecution or paying a bigger
fine and following the voluntary plan.

The problem with the Senate bill is Bush. It
depends on him to enforce the law and we
know he won’t. The only protection we can
depend on is taller fences and better guards.
