Language Arts 101

Congress didn’t declare war, as only they can, they authorized the use of military force – so Bush should stop claiming war powers. He should also stop calling everyone who’s phone he taps, or bank records he snoops, a terrorist based on circumstantial evidence. By that standard every politician is a crook – they all [...]

Bush the Barbarian

He may believe illegal immigrants clog Medicaid roles, but his experts don’t. He probably never visited a nursing home or saw folks who don’t know where they are, much less when or where they were born, who will be expected to produce proof of citizenship tomorrow or lose their care. Chances are he just saw [...]

Testing Family Ties

The House wants to search for oil near Jeb Bush’s sandy beaches. If the Senate decides to go along the President will have a problem. Will he use his veto for a sibling or opt for energy independence, and say “I’m not my brother’s keeper?”

Budget Bamboozle

In a burst of concern for the deficit Bush asks for the line item veto, says it would let him reduce excessive congressional spending. He fails to mention it would also turn earmarks into powerful tools for controlling recalcitrant Republicans. It won’t pass because they are not fools.

Some Constituent Services Have To Stop

McCain misses the point on immigration. Unscrupulous businesses benefit from the status quo. Until government stops enabling their crimes any change in the law is a waste. Instead of blanket amnesty, let employers buy legal status for people they claim to need, by paying a fair wage, a big fine and having the status of [...]

Once Burned, Twice Shy

Bush and Cheney both seem shocked someone leaked the fact they were secretly searching bank records, and newspapers wrote about it even when the administration asked them not to. They told the papers the program was legal, important and saving lives, assured them safeguards were in place to protect the privacy of Americans, but no [...]

Proposed Campaign Haiku

Impeach Dick Cheney, let Bush run the country – he can’t do any worse.

The administration found another way to break the law in secret and protect us. Of course they cried “foul” when it was leaked, and accused the press of putting us in danger. Cheney calls the program “absolutely essential.” John Snow says “It’s really government at its best… responsible government…effective government.” Thus reassured we can return [...]

Democrats Need Slogans. Not Resolutions

The administration doesn’t know how to end the Iraq war, but that doesn’t mean Congress can. A majority of the public says they would vote for candidates who promise to bring troops home, but what will they say after Republicans shout “Democrats will cut and run a thousand times? A better strategy would be to [...]

If Democrats don’t stop talking about troop withdrawal, they’ll lose the next election. They need to admit Congress can’t manage a war, but a Democratic majority can identify the mismanager, and force Bush to get someone else. Practically everyone but the President thinks Donald Rumsfeld is the screw-up. If serious investigation proves it, Bush will [...]

To Prevail This Fall, Promise the Possible

If Democrats hope to win either the House or Senate they must reach a consensus on what they would do about the Iraq war. Hold hearings to get around Rumsfeld and find out what the military really wants. This would be a believable proposition for voters, and more productive than debating arbitrary dates for the [...]

One Down

David Safavian, former lobbyist, chief of staff at the GSA, and White House procurement officer has been found guilty of lying. He will go down in history as the first Bush administration official to be held accountable. Maybe he’ll also be a drum major.

The Inscrutable Congress

A fence along the border won’t stop illegal immigration, but it’s tangible, something to point to, a source of work for contributors. It’s also the only thing legislators can’t circumvent for an irate business interest. The question: why do they bother debating?

Sources of Inspiration

Bush thinks Iraq will be all right. He likes the new prime minister. Good! Maliki may be our last hope. This came from the president’s gut. Let’s hope it’s better than the war plan he pulled out of Rumsfeld’s butt.

“Cut and Run Could Be Good

Instead of seeking ways to end the war, bring trade into balance, and reduce the deficit, Congress debates bills they know won’t pass and “gotcha resolutions to create campaign fodder. It’s time to cut the crap and run the country.

Even Straight Arrows Can Break

After more than two years someone finally convinced Patrick Fitzgerald to do the wrong thing – not indict Rove. It must have been someone in the know because the announcement came as the President was making big news in Iraq, and all the talking heads were busy. Eventually Judge Fitzgerald will be back in the [...]

Fitzgerald Finally Fizzled

It’s not surprising that a justice department that defends torture and rendition thinks it is alright for Karl Rove to lie. It’s not surprising that a president who ignores a law against warrantless wiretaps would continue to employ an admitted liar. It’s not surprising that an administration that can’t plan, manage or win an “easy [...]

Bush took his cabinet to Camp David to discuss Iraq. He said General Casey told them via teleconference he would assess “Iraqi capability to be able to take the fight to the enemy and secure the country, “and come back to us and make recommendations to us. Whatever we do will be based upon the [...]
