Provide evidence of legal status to anyone with the right to be here – stamp it “tamperproof. Recognize illegals as humans with a right to fair treatment until they can be kicked out. Give those who come forward a fair hearing on reasons that might let them pay to stay. Investigate everyone paid less than [...]

Plan for Iran a Last Resort

An administration spokesman assures us they are using diplomacy to influence Iran – bombing is only a contingency plan. Bush would go to war only in an emergency – i.e. to maintain control of the House and Senate and avoid Congressional oversight. Threatening to use nuclear bombs to persuade a country not to develop any [...]

Worrywart

Having dealt with Afghanistan and Iraq, Bush wants to attack Iran. He’s certain it’s a threat that must be dealt with before he leaves office, though he’s leaving his first forays to successors. In considering his concerns, we should recall Bush appraisals of military menace are even less reliable than Clinton’s assessments of White House [...]

It’s hard to believe Scooter Libby remembered the President authorized him to leak classified information to the press, then forgot what he actually said. It may be impossible to persuade anyone he was involved in national security issues more important than trying to hide Bush deceptions leading up to the Iraq war.

Politics: the Art of Passing Poor Laws

The effort to fix broken borders has been a waste of time. Some people want to do too much, the rest think things are just fine. All proposals so far are impossible – too many interviews would be required. Send 11 million illegals home? No way, we couldn’t evacuate New Orleans. We could develop an [...]

One More Chorus of Auld Lang Syne

Tom DeLay said good bye today. We don’t know why, but we can guess. He didn’t do it to help Democrats – they’ll miss him a lot. He probably responded to a Republican offer he couldn’t refuse. It may be years before we find out what was put forward – a fancy job? an ambassadorship? [...]

Budget Blindness

Republicans in the House struggle with a $7 billion increase in a $2.8 trillion budget that’s a change of less than .002 percent. Conservatives fear sending the wrong signal on fiscal responsibility. Moderates worry about social programs in an election year. Both sides have identified real problems. It’s too bad neither one is even close [...]

Unfinished Business

The next hurricane season starts in 60 days, and Bush still hasn’t found someone to succeed “Heck of a job Brownie at FEMA. Is it because 20% of its jobs are vacant, its status shrank more than its budget, or the new guy would have to work for Chertoff? Whatever the problem, the question now [...]

Secretary of State Spins Through England

Condoleezza Rice ignored the noisy protesters as she toured Blackburn with Jack Straw, and tried to convince audiences that America does what she says, not what they see happening. During questions she did blurt out some truth: “I know we’ve made tactical errors, thousands… She didn’t cite specifics, and neither did her spokesman, he said [...]
