The meaning of “stay the course
depends on the definition of “the.
We promised to spend $18 billion rebuilding Iraq.
It went for other things, but “the course
was the amount of money, not the objective.
When it’s gone we’re done.

Maybe the Iraqis are happy
we decided to trade electricity for elections,
schools and hospitals for soldiers and prisons,
better roads for body armor for firemen.
Given the choice they might
trade our occupation for their own civil war.
