Buttressing the Base
Bush has decided to do something about
Republican and public unrest over Iraq.
He will defend his policy by repeating
what he has been saying for a year.
He will not say he’s wrong. He won’t
suggest a new direction, or even a shift
in tactics. He simply reasserts that his
strategy “is going to work.”
So, our fate depends on politicians,
who fear compromise, agreeing on a
constitution, and trainees who hate us,
risking their lives to clean up our mess.
We can take solace in the President’s
promise to talk about this subject for
two weeks and assurance that “I think
about Iraq every day, every single day.”
