Robert Vasquez, county commissioner,
crusades against “an imminent invasion,”

of illegal immigrants from the south, and tries
to have Canyon county declared a disaster area.

That splits the party in Republican Idaho, and
seems at odds with his thoughts of running
for governor or Congress next year. Undaunted
he says, “If I were governor, I would close the
borders of Idaho and mobilize the National Guard
to secure checkpoints against all illegal aliens,”

His county may be the only locality using
federal racketeering laws against employers
of illegal immigrants. That is not exactly the
Bush plan, but it seems imminently fair. Who
besides a racketeer depends on doing something
dishonest to keep their business profitable?

He’ll have trouble raising money, but Vasquez
should get the votes of people whose jobs
are threatened – even if they’re not Republicans.
