Justice

I wonder if red state voters
understand what Bush means
by bankruptcy reform.
They must, red states lead
the country in bankruptcy suits.
I’m sure they appreciate his effort
to make them more responsible
for their debts. After all, he made
their kids responsible for his debts,
and they re-elected him.

Focus

Congressional investigators discovered
the Medicaid agency rarely verifies
that pharmaceutical firms grant them the
discounts required by law. When they find
errors, they require no corrective action.
A cost estimate for this lack of oversight
is not available, but a small percentage of the
$37 billion Medicaid spent on drugs last year
would be a significant saving. Apparently no

No Compromise

A friend seeks reconciliation
between liberals and the government,
tells me hate will destroy my health.
Perhaps, but deficits will bury my
grandchildren in debt, if they
don’t bankrupt the country first.
Accepting that fate without a fight
would give me guilt more destructive
than hate. Healing depends on winning.

Hope

The president says Social Security faces
a crisis, but the details of the problem,
and his suggested solutions, change
more often than the reasons for his tax cuts.
Some economists predict a shortfall
in forty or fifty years, others maybe never.
They all agree the remedies Bush suggested
so far would not affect those projections.

Like children on a scavenger hunt,
scrambling to win a prize, the administration
searches for tidbits from the attack on Iraq:
More voters than expected,
Lebanon demands Syrians leave,
Israel and Palestine cut their kill rate.
The Bush team beams brighter than
a fisherman who bought a $200,000 boat,
and caught three bass big enough to keep.
