The Bright Side
The election of 2004 threatens
the country with disaster. Those
who voted for the winner should
watch the president carefully.
Those who didn’t, don’t have to.
I ignore his words because I
don’t believe them, his actions
because I can’t believe them.
As an innocent, helpless bystander
I fear the future, but freed from the
need to follow the news, I thank
our leader for this gift of time.
It had never dawned on me before that the only people who listen are those who already agree – and that doesn’t just go for the presidency!
But I have to admit that I don’t listen much to views I don’t agree with – so I don’t know why it surprised me. I wanted to argue with the poem and say that the narrator _should_ listen, not agreeing is no excuse. But when you don’t believe what’s being said, what would be the point?
